Other Options for Labor Support or Postpartum Care

Although we aim primarily at families who would not otherwise have access to doula care, we do offer doulas to any woman giving birth at the UCSD Medical Center. Because the Hearts & Hands Program is an all-volunteer, on-call program we cannot offer a 100% guarantee of a doula for every woman. However, there are also options in San Diego for privately hiring a birth or postpartum doula who may offer additional services at UCSD or other birth locations in the area. Expectant families should interview several doulas before selecting on who best fits their needs.

$$$ Tip: Thinking of hiring a private birth or postpartum doula?

  • Instead of too many duplicate baby shower gifts, offer friends and family the opportunity to help you by making a contribution toward doula fees.
  • Some insurance companies will reimburse for doula services – see what your policy covers in advance).
